Is that not one of the joys of reading though? Being able to step away from real life and for that time, no matter how short, you can fall in love with a character. I sometimes wonder where the author would have taken them if they kept going. They become old friends.
It certainly is one of the great joys of reading. For all I know, it might also be intentional on the part of the writer. Moreover, he might leave the reader hanging a bit just to keep them thinking about characters along after his plot is finished.
